Individual Note (shared)
Abt. 1990, Red was diagnosed with a blood clot in his groin artery. He was started on blood thinners and a special diet, and quit smoking after almost 50 years. Abt. 1995, he was again hospitalized and after a month was finally diagnosed with kidney failure. He did peritaneal dialysis for a while, but it wasn't very successful so he was switched to hemo-dialysis.
He developed a bout of pneumonia in the early spring of 2000 after a period of weight loss, and was hospitalized for a short period in May. Over the course of the summer, his breathing became more difficult and he was again hospitalized on July 3 (?), 2000 after he collapsed upon arriving at his dialysis clinic. Further tests were done and finally a lung biopsy was scheduled for July 10, but on July 8 his breathing became so poor, he had to be intubated and therefore heavily sedated. The biopsy went ahead on July 10 and on Tuesday afternoon the doctor arranged a meeting with the family for the following morning to review the results. We knew bad news was looming and on Wednesday morning of July 12 at 10:00am, wife Mary, daughters Lynn, Debbie and Marilyn, and grand-daughter Cathy Hall assembled in Red's room for the meeting. Red's sedative had not yet been given, so he was semi-aware of what the doctor was saying - Red had terminal late stage lung cancer with massive tumours filling both lungs.
Red passed by 9:00 am the next morning, Thursday, July 13, 2000 with wife Mary by his side. Grand-daughter Cathy was married that Saturday, July 15, 2000. A beautifully eloquent toast was made by the MC, Lynn's best friend Kathy O'Flaherty, in honour of Red at the wedding reception.
The interment was held the following week with members of the immedate family only, with a Memorial Service held on ? in the Social Room at Red and Mary's condo in Stoney Creek. Many friends and family attended. Lynn's minister, Father Michael ? addressed the mourners, and Lynn, Debbie and Marilyn each gave a eulogy followed by a slide show of Red's life.1
