Marilyn was delivered at home - 754 Cumberland Avenue in Burlington, ON, CA by grandmother Elsie Peake Martin. Parents Red and Isabel lived with his parents Elsie and Robert. According to mother Isabel, she went into labour around 2am and quickly realized she would not make the hospital. Isabel recalls "Your dad just ran up and down the stairs not knowing what to do. Your grandmother calmly delivered you in our bedroom, and when you came out she gently held you upside down by the knees and 'dipped' you to make you cry. Then she put you in a dresser drawer lined with blankets for the trip to the hospital with a very young police officer who arrived after the delivery. It was a very cold snowy February night." Marilyn was born at 2:30 am and was 6 pounds, 14 ounces. The name Marilyn came from famous Lake Ontario swimmer, Marilyn Bell.
Red and Isabel moved to Hamilton in 1964, but Marilyn stayed with her grandparents in order to start kindergarten a year early - a new program that was being tried in Burlington at Lawrie Smith School. When she completed kindergarten in the summer of 1965, she went to live in Hamilton with parents on Prospect Street near Ivor Wynne Stadium.
Red and Isabel separated right about this time. They took turns living with the children on 42nd Street on the Hamilton Mountain.
In the summer of 1966, oldest sister Lynn went to live with Red; Isabel moved with Debbie and Marilyn to Vancouver then to Toronto to be with her new boyfriend, Steve Toth. In the spring of 1970, Steve left Isabel. She was 4 months pregnant with Jason who was born November 28, 1970. In the summer of 1970, Isabel moved Debbie and Marilyn back to Hamilton to be closer to her family. Debbie moved in with Red and new wife Mary since Debbie and Isabel were fighting constantly. Lynn was already married at this time.
Marilyn met Bradley Conrad Gris at Southmount SS in December 1977, although they had been in the same class in grade 8 (1972/73) and had both attended Barton SS from 1973 to 1977. They started dating on December 16, 1977, became engaged in the summer of 1980 and married on July 17, 1982.1
