Individual Note (shared)
For some reason, his mother left when Robert was about 1 year and sister Jessie was about 5 or 6 years old. Their father sent the two children to live with his mother, Margaret Watson Martin in Shaw's Bridge, Ballylesson, near Belfast in Northern Ireland. The name "Martin" was given to the children as grandmother Margaret's second husband's name was Angus Martin. Apparently Angus was very mean to Robert who, along with his sister Jessie, never heard from either his mother or father again.
Robert's Uncle Angus (oldest son of Margaret and Angus), helped arrange his passage to Canada. He boarded the S.S. Corsican in Liverpool, England on August 6, 1920 with about five pounds in his pocket. It was on board this ship that he met Elsie Peake, his future wife. He asked her if she wanted to dance, but she replied that she didn't know how. He told her that was alright because neither did he.
Upon disembarking from the ship, they must have exchanged addresses. Robert was bound for Forest, ON where he worked for about a year before coming to Hamilton. He and Elsie married in May of 1921. He got a job as a clerk in a hardware store, and they worked as farm hands. They later bought a house on Strathearne Avenue and Robert went to work as a maintenance man for the Hamilton Stove Exchange at the corner of Kenilworth and Barton. Robert served in the Air Force during WWII and was stationed for a time overseas. Some time after his discharge, they bought a 5 acre farm at 754 Cumberland Ave. in Burlington, ON, now the corner of Cumberland and Fairview St. They retired in 1968 and bought a home near Nanticoke, ON on Lake Erie at the end of Cheapeside Road. Robert suffered a heart attack on the night of the couple's 50th wedding anniversary and died in hospital a short time later.
Early upon coming to Canada, Robert corresponded with his sister Jessie, who had stayed in Ireland and married a man with the last name of Copeland or Copelan. Elsie used to write the letters for him. She wrote infrequently and stopped in the 1950s when it is believed that Jessie had died.
