Sailed from Egypt 17/1 on board Anglo Canadian.
Sunday 20/1: Wireless received on board. Submarines about.
Monday 21/1: Very slow journey. Average 7 knots.
Exceeding good food.
Life boat alarm.
Tuesday 22nd: 11.00am Italian boat in convoy torpedoed.
All standing at Boat Stations.
Dismissed for dinner from Boat Stations.
??????? afterwards, the same as usual.
Asleep after dinner below. Woke up with explosion.
Got on top deck. All confusion.
Boat torpedoed.
Another one gone; "Manchester ????"
Decoy boat and Trawler standing by, other boats slips away.
Waiting orders.
Lowers our own lifeboat. 26 men in it owing to other lifeboats being smashed.
Taffy shouting and excited. He is told to shut up or else he will go over the side.
Trawler comes along. Everyone is quite happy with the exception of Taffy.
Picked up by trawler. Headache; feeling a bit sick.
4.30pm to 1.30am: On trawler. Trawlers crew exceptionally good - makes hot tea for all of us. Jolly good chaps crew of trawler. All saved except 3.
Landed at Malta 1.30am.
Wednesday 23/1/18: Dry clothes issued to us by Soldiers & Sailors Home.
In barracks.
Brigadier General & other officers leave the island for Italy.
Transferred to St George's Barracks. Arrival ???? by Lord Methuen (?).
Sunday 27/1/18: Survivors go to Church.
Monday: Confined to barracks.
Tuesday: Still waiting to get home. Have been visited by two of the crew of trawler.
Wednesday 30/1: Orders to embark.
Open motor ??? from St George's to Seliena.
3.30pm Boarded HMT ship Inventer.
Thursday 31st: Sailed away from Malta 9.30am.
Friday: Spent torpedoe picked up by TBD.
Rumours of submarines.
Saturday: Still travelling. Nothing extra doing.
Sunday: Arrived at Sett. Owing to submarines arrived 3pm.
Left Sett. Monday 10.30am; Foggy.
